Dave’s Redistricting

This project kicked off in early 2020 and was a tactical request given the upcoming 2020 election. The goal was to enable citizens to understood the implications of their vote and why gerrymandering affects elections.

The client ask:

Redesign the homepage and the state pages to improve the existing experience and allow more users to start creating maps themselves and learn about the effects of gerrymandering.

Examining the existing experience

The expected journey

Users typically find the site through links from existing articles or publications. A user would see maps created by others in those publications and find interest in how those maps were made. The goal was to encourage these users to explore and create their own maps to share.

There was also a secondary goal to partner with educators to teach about gerrymandering.

Designs

This was a short engagement with a very clear set of requirements, so designs advanced from wireframes to hi-fidelity quickly. Since most users started on the homepage, this was a critical page to ensure that the user understood what to do on that page. The user could only draw a single map at a given time, so they were prompted to choose a state to begin.

I’d love to work with you.
